This is not surprising as  his teachers were the greatest Qaris of the time. He first studied Qirat under his mentor, the great  sage, described as Qutbul-Aqtaab, Shah Yaqub Badarpuri (R.), who learnt from Shaykh Abdul  Majid (R.), from his mentor Shaykh Abdul Wahhab (R.), the Shaykh of the Shaykhs of his time  and he had an unbroken chain leading to Abu Amr ad-Daani (R.).

The Muslims of the subcontinent are, and will always be indebted to Fultali Saheb (R.) for the  Science of Tajweed. His Contributions in Ilmul Qiraat

Allama Fultali (R.) devoted his entire life to the service of the holy Quran, and the world came to  know of his endeavours. His contribution in this field is unparalleled and acknowledged  throughout the Muslim world. His mission began while he was young. After completing his  studies in all traditional Islamic studies, he was instructed by his Shaykh to perfect his recitation  of the holy Quran further. He went to the famous Qari, Mawlana Abdur Rauf Karampuri  Shahbazpuri(R.). Initially, Mawlana Karampuri (R.) was reluctant to teach him due to his high

status as great scholar. After Mawlana Karampuri (R.) saw that he was practicing with little kids,  he witnessed his humble behaviour, and began to cry. He told him that he will teach him the  Science of Quranic recitation. After finishing his studies with Mawlana Karampuri (R.) and then  in Makkah al Mukarramah with the greatest Qari of his time, Ahmad Hijazi (R.), he returned to  Bangladesh and began to teach Hadith and Tafsir at Badarpur Madrasah.

One day, while he was teaching at Badarpur Madrasah, one of the greatest scholars of the Indian  subcontinent, Mawlana Abdun Nur Gharkapani (R.) came to visit him. Fultali Saheb (R.) narrated  the incident himself as follows : I was teaching Tirmidhi Shareef in class one day, when Mawlana  Abdun Nur Gharkapani (R.) paid me a visit. I thought he had come to observe me teaching my  students. After the lessons he said to me, “I have come for an important matter.” I said, “What is  the matter?” He said, “teach us Qiraat once a week.” I was very busy with teaching Hadith and  Tafseer as this requires a lot of preparation. So, I extended apologies and refused. The next day he  visited me again while I was teaching and after the lesson, he said, “I have come again for the  same matter.” I told him my difficulties. But then he said, “it is not my request, but from someone  greater.” I said, “Did (my master) Mawlana Badarpuri Saheb send you?” He said, “No, but  someone greater than he.” I said, inform me. He said, “I saw the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa  Sallam in a dream. I requested that I wish to hear him recite the holy Quran. The Prophet  Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam recited in the most beautiful manner. I asked Oh Prophet Sallallahu  Alaihi wa Sallam, I want to learn the recitation of the holy Quran as you did. So, he pointed  towards a man to his right. And I saw that it was you sitting beside Him.” After hearing this, I  stood up and informed him with utmost respect that I would teach one hour a week by the will of  Allah Taala. He asked, “Where will we sit?” I told him, “at the shrine of Hadrat Adam Khaki  (R.)”, one of the 360 saints who accompanied Hadrat Shah Jalal (R.). We agreed that we would  do it every Thursday, at midday. The shrine was one mile away. So Mawlana Abdun Nur (R.)  bought me a horse. The word spread that I was teaching Qiraat, and I found that around 250  scholars and Imams had come to me. The lesson extended all the day until Isha.

And that is how Allama Fultali (R.) started teaching Qiraat forming the first Darul Qirat  (intensive Qirat & Tajweed course), with over 1500 branches now all over the world. Every year  during Ramadan, till the year he left this world, he taught thousands of students at Fultali Saheb  bari, the central branch of Darul Qirat. May Allah Taala accept his efforts and keep them alive  until Qiyamah, Amin.

His Contributions Worldwide

Allama Fultali (R.) also made great contributions in other aspects of Islamic studies. Not only has  he trained thousands of Qaris (those who correctly recite the holy Quran), but also he produced  many Muhadditheen (scholars of Hadith) and Mufassireen (elucidators of the holy Quran). He  founded many Madrasahs in Bangladesh and other parts of the world, as well as Masjids,  Maktabs and other Islamic institutions.

His Contributions in Bangladesh

Allama Fultali (R.) was the first to initiate the Darul Qirat system, an intensive course which  enables the students to rapidly improve their recitation of the holy Quran with application of  Tajweed. Along with this glorious project, Fultali Saheb (R.) also founded Anjumane Al-Islah, an  organisation that aims to spread the true beliefs of Islam, namely the beliefs of Ahlus Sunnah wal

Jama’ah. Thousands of Ulama are affiliated with this organisation. Allama Fultali (R.) also  inaugurated Bangladesh Anjumane Talamije Islamia, an Islamic Students’ organisation. This  project has seen rapid success over the years, guiding thousands of young students towards the  right path of Ahle Sunnah Wal Jama’ah, publishing many books, magazines and articles.

His Contributions in the UK

Allama Fultali’s organisations also left behind a great legacy in Britain with numerous Masjids  and Islamic institutions initiated by him. Many of his students have become Imams at leading  Masjids in the UK, while others have become teachers in various academic institutions. The  foremost of his projects in the UK is Darul Hadis Latifiah in London, an Islamic Secondary  School and Islamic Higher Education (IHE) centre. It is one of the leading Islamic Institutions in  the United Kingdom today with over 500 students. It has so far seen 15 students graduating with a  BA in Islamic Theology. Some of the successful students have continued their studies in Jamia al

Azhar in Cairo, while others have enrolled at renowned Universities in the UK including  Cambridge and Kings Colleges. This institute has achieved brilliant GCSE grades in recent years.  Towards the end of his life, he had desired to establish a base for the female Muslims in which  they could acquire knowledge of both Islam and British curricullum. Alhamdulillah, his dua was  accepted. Allah Taala enabled his followers in the UK through the donations from generous  Muslims nationwide, to open a girls school in East London. The Madrasah was named Latifiah  Girls’ School, after its founder, Allama Fultali (R.). Allama Fultali (R.) also inaugurated an  organisation consisting of only Ulama (scholars): Latifiah Ulama Society (formerly known as  Ulama Society UK) as well as Qari Society.

The world suffered a tragic loss of a great Wali Allah! Allama Fultali (R.) breathed his last  around 20.00 GMT on the 15th January 2008, corresponding to tuesday, 7th Muharram 1429 HA,  at his home in Subhanighat, Sylhet.

May Allah accept his contributions to Islam and the Muslim Ummah and raise his status in the  hereafter. Aameen!!

His funeral was held the next evening after Asr at Balai Hawr which was led by his eldest son,  Allama Imad Uddin Chowdhury Fultali. The number of those who took part in the funeral was so  great that no journalist could affirm an exact number, which is why all so many different figures  were mentioned in different newspapers, Radio stations and on TV. One of the daily papers,  Daily Shobuj Sylhet, estimated around 2 million people on the following day, 17th January 2008.  Many other newspapers among them the Daily Shangram, the Daily Jalalabad and the Daily  Sylheter Dak mentioned that over 100000 people were unable to attend due to huge traffic from  Sylhet to Fultali.

His Miracles

The people of Bangladesh and the entire world witnessed countless miracles from Hadrat  Allama Fultali (R.), by the will of Allah Ta’ala since his childhood, until he left this material  world. Allama Fultali (R.) was renowned for his miracles. But he never once mentioned them  rather he always tried to hide them. Among the many miracles were :

1. While he was a student at Rampur Alia Madrasah, his lodging master was the Vice-Principal  Syed Nobbi Shah, who had no children for many years. Allama Fultali (R.) was already known to  be a pious and Allah-fearing man and that he recieved khilafat from the Qutb Shah Yaqub  Badarpuri (R.). So master Syed Nobbi asked Allama Fultali (R.) to make du’a for him. Allama  Fultali (R.) prayed and gave him a Taweez (an amulet containing verses of the holy Quran). By  the will of Allah Ta’ala Syed Nobbi was granted a child.

2. Allama Fultali (R.)’s youngest son, Mawlana Husam Uddin Chowdhury narrates, Once Allama  Fultali (R.) went to India with his family. Due to strong tide in the Barak river of India, the roads  besides the river, the houses and the highway were on the verge of collapsing. The local  authorities attempted to prevent this, but failed. The local people approached Allama Fultali (R.)  and sought his du’a. Allama Fultali (R.) went to the afflicted area and he stood and prayed and  Allah ta’ala accepted his du’a and the homes and roads remained intact.

3. Hadrat Allama Fultali (R.)’s private driver, Bilal Ahmed narrates, Once (1995) Allama Fultali  (R.) was on his way to a mahfil in Srimongol via Moulvibazar at night. Suddenly, from the tea  garden, a tiger appeared and lied on the middle of the road. Despite the driver frequently horning  with his car, the tiger didn’t budge. Allama Fultali (R.) came out of the car and went to the tiger.  He recited something and tapped the tiger’s back. Instantly, the tiger got up and left.

4. Muhammad Mujibur Rahman from Jagannatpur, Sunamganj narrates, in Nolzur river, near  Tiargaw village of Jagannatpur, five people had drowned from a boat. The people had searched  for them, but they could not be found. They had tried all they could to retrieve their bodies but to  no avail. Consequently, they came to Allama Fultali (R.). After hearing their concern, he handed  them a Ta’weez and told them to place where they sank. They carried out the command of Allama  Fultali (R.) and to their amazaement just shortly after placing the Ta’weez the corpses had  emerged as though someone had pushed them up the river. Many people, journalists and public  alike had witnessed this, and prayed for the life of Allama Fultali (R.).

5. In March 2004, the historical Shan-e-Risalat conference took place in Sylhet Goverment Alia  Madrasah field, presided by Hadrat Allama Fultali (R.). Prominent Ulama and Shuyukh from  Egypt, Kuwait, Pakistan and all over the world were present. In the final day of the conference, it  began to rain. A few of the organisers went to Allama Fultali (R.) to make du’a so that the rain  may stop. Subhanallah! As soon as he made du’a the rain stopped and the sun began to shine.  Everyone present was amazed by this miracle of Allama Fultali (R.).

Nasihat to His Mureedeen (Disciples) after Taking Bai’ah

Listen to my words carefully! Alongside supererogatory (nafal) worship, be of assistance to  others. Be exemplary in your behaviour towards others. This will result in success both in this life  and the hereafter. Good behaviour towards other people is loved by Allah Ta’ala. Be respectful to  your elders and affectionate to your youngers. This was the way of the Prophet (SAW). Upon  seeing the prosperity of others, show happiness, for who upon seeing good happen to others, feels  disheartened, Allah Ta’ala will lower his status and his faith remains unfulfilled. Do not harbour  bad thoughts about others rather see others in positivity. For if upon seeing good to others you  become envious then even the abundant extent of your worship will not result in success.

Pray the five daily Salah diligently. Only act that will be a positive impulse both in this life and in  the hereafter is Salah. Whoever prays Salah nicely his life becomes nice and peaceful. Perform  the ruku and sajdah with humility and venerance. When we offer ruku and sajdah, we bow down  our heads and place it on the ground. Whoever bows down with his/her hearts during ruku and  sajdah, Allah Ta’ala will not disgrace him/her in life and will grant him/her a lofty status in life.

With every breath make it a habit to synchronise it with the Shahadah. When inhaling utter, “La  Ilaaha” and upon exhaling say, ‘Illallah’. Do this without moving your mouth or tongue. Keep in  mind that with every breath you draw, it is one less from that prescribed to you. Remembrance of  Allah in this manner will be of benefit. Close your eyes and do ponder (dheyan) like this (Allama  Fultali (R.) showed his mureeds how to do the Dhikr). Continuous practice in this way will  become a habit. If you remember Allah Ta’ala once, Allah Ta’ala will also remember you once  and remember, the sound of Dhikr goes direct to the Arsh of Allah Ta’ala.

After salah, sit down and bring to mind Allah Ta’ala is in front of me and He is watching me and  do dhikr. Before going to sleep, do Dhikr of Allah Ta’ala. This will be written as if you have done  Dhikr all night. Recite daily Durood a minimum of two hundred times and Istighfar shareef one  hundred times. If it is possible then recite Durood Shareef more.
