The 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs was the first ever worldwide treaty to have included cannabis (or marijuana) with different medicine and imposed a blanket ban on their manufacturing and supply aside from medicinal and research purposes. The 1961 international treaty Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs classed cannabis with laborious drugs. Narayan Sarma’s Dhanvantariya Nighantu, a contemporary textual content, mentions a narcotic of the plant. India voted in favour of eradicating cannabis and cannabis resin from Schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs at the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) on 9 December 2020.

In February 2018, the Prime Minister’s Office sent a notification to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare directing the ministry to examine the potential advantages associated with cannabis and issue a response to the letter.
